Melbourne Airport Terminal 1 – Amenities

As lead lighting designer and project manager at WSP Australia, I developed the lighting for the latest upgrade of the existing amenities at Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 of Melbourne Airport, working in collaboration with Peddle Thorp Architects.

Lighting a warm materials palette

The upgraded facilities are built around a warm and inviting materials palette with integrated indoor planting, and the lighting was developed to complement it through bespoke solutions throughout, including feature lighting to the mirrors and vanities. Sensor-operated hand wash systems and integrated scenting systems form part of the same intent: facilities that respond to the traveller.

Designed to be used by everyone

In line with Melbourne Airport’s commitment to inclusivity, the upgrades include Changing Places facilities and All Gender toilets. Lighting contributes directly to how well those spaces perform: they must be legible and comfortable for people using them in very different ways, and the scheme was developed accordingly.

Taken together, the lighting strategy was integral to creating a welcoming and modern atmosphere across facilities that are heavily used, in line with the airport’s commitment to enhancing passenger satisfaction.
