405 Bourke Street, with architecture by Woods Bagot, is an architectural standout on one of Melbourne’s best-known streets. I was part of the collaborative WSP Australia team that developed the lighting design for its facade and lobby.
The lantern
The building is known as ‘the lantern’, which describes precisely what the lighting was required to achieve: a softly glowing facade rather than an illuminated surface. The building had to read as a source of light in its own right.
Presence on the street
The result activates the surrounding urban landscape, giving Bourke Street an inviting landmark after dark. The intent throughout was character and understated elegance rather than spectacle, appropriate to a vibrant and dynamic part of the city.
