A junior club’s home ground brought up to standard through an LED retrofit to the existing poles.

I played a key role in designing the lighting upgrade for Balnarring Thunder Junior Football Club’s home ground at Balnarring Recreation Reserve, working at VAILO and partnering with Bewired to complete the project by early 2024.

From metal halide to LED

Twelve outdated metal halide floodlights were replaced with VAILO’s advanced Zenith Gen-V LED luminaires. The viability of that replacement depended on whether the new luminaires could be mounted to the existing structure.

A custom head frame

A direct fit was not possible. Working closely with Ingal EPS, we developed a custom head frame so the new luminaires could be retrofitted onto the existing poles, which kept the civil works — and therefore the cost and the disruption to the ground — out of the project.

The result

Lighting levels rose to over 100 lux, significantly improving visibility for junior matches and training, while the club’s annual energy costs fell by around 25%.
