A contemporary annexe alongside nineteenth-century Parliament House, illuminated to sit quietly within its heritage setting.
The Members’ Annexe extends the working accommodation of the Parliament of Victoria on a site of considerable sensitivity, adjoining the nineteenth-century Parliament House and its heritage gardens. I was part of the FPOV team that developed the lighting design.
Lighting within a heritage setting
The strategy was shaped by that context. Rather than announcing the new building, the lighting was developed to complement its integration with the surrounding heritage fabric — picking out architectural detail, supporting the way the building is used, and holding the new work in balance with the older buildings and landscape around it.
The result is deliberately restrained: a subtle, considered approach that meets the practical requirements of a modern parliamentary workplace while respecting the vision of a building that blends into its landscape rather than competing with it.
