South Geelong To Waurn Ponds Duplication

I played a significant role in the lighting design and project management for the South Geelong to Waurn Ponds Duplication at WSP Australia, developing and overseeing the lighting upgrades at South Geelong Station to enhance station accessibility, safety and aesthetics.

Four environments, one station

The work covered the new station building, the public forecourt, the second platform and the pedestrian overpass. These are four distinct conditions — an interior, an open public space, a linear platform and an enclosed crossing — and a passenger moves through all of them in a single journey. The lighting was developed so that they read as one continuous environment.

Wayfinding, safety and integration

Collaborating with architects and engineers, the lighting was developed to deliver well-illuminated, modern spaces that improved wayfinding, safety and connectivity, and it was integrated with the CCTV and landscaping elements rather than installed around them. That integration is significant on a station: lighting coordinated with camera positions and planting is what allows each space to perform as intended.

Capacity and public space

The project increased the capacity of the rail line and, alongside that, delivered accessible, high-quality public spaces with enhanced transport connections.
