The Malt District Stage 2A

Heritage & public realm · Melbourne

Concept lighting for two of the most recognisable structures on Melbourne’s skyline, developed alongside the public realm of the surrounding precinct.

I was lead lighting designer for the Stage 2 concept lighting at The Malt District, working at WSP Australia. The concept covered the public areas of the precinct together with heritage facade lighting for two of Melbourne’s landmark structures: the Nylex Clock and the Victoria Bitter Silos.

Lighting two Melbourne landmarks

Both structures are industrial heritage that has become part of Melbourne’s visual identity. They are recognised primarily in silhouette, from a distance and most often after dark, and that recognition is carried by their form rather than their detail — a distinction that shaped the approach throughout.

Precinct and public realm

Alongside the facades, the concept addressed lighting to the public areas of the precinct, so that the landmarks and the spaces around them were considered as a single coherent scheme rather than as a feature and its surroundings.

This work was developed to concept stage.
