In my role as the lead lighting designer and project manager for the W Melbourne, I was deeply involved in crafting the hotel’s unique sensory experience, working closely with stakeholders to bring the vision of this iconic property to life. My responsibilities included overseeing the lighting design and project management for each public area, ensuring a cohesive, immersive journey for guests from the moment they arrive.
The porte-cochère, designed with a moody ambiance, features a transformative sculpture that illuminates dynamically to shift from ‘W’ (W Hotel) to ‘M’ (Melbourne), setting an enchanting tone for guests. In the lobby, I aimed to capture Melbourne’s essence, with lighting that highlights the cobblestone textures and accentuates the lenticular wall art, recreating the atmosphere of a classic Melbourne laneway.
For Curious Bar, the hidden gem of the hotel, I managed the lighting design to enhance its discreet entrance, featuring a Corian sculpture that mimics a peeling wall to reveal an intimate bar experience. On the top-level pool deck, I developed a sophisticated lighting scheme for the wet bar area, balancing sunlight with accent lighting to create a versatile space that transitions seamlessly from day to night, ideal for both upscale social events and corporate functions.
Each public area was designed with careful attention to detail, creating layers of visual intrigue and connecting guests with Melbourne’s vibrant art scene. I collaborated closely with artists and designers, integrating lighting with works like Rus Kitchin’s mural and Ash Keating’s furniture pieces to celebrate the city’s creative energy.
The guest rooms were another focus, where I employed unconventional lighting approaches to evoke curiosity and inspire an emotional connection. Through close collaboration with numerous stakeholders, from artists to architects, I played a key role in making W Melbourne a one-of-a-kind, immersive destination that reflects the spirit and creativity of the city.
